Father with his son and daughter in a black and white studio portrait

An Ongoing Series

The Baba Project

A portrait series documenting Black fathers and their children in the Raleigh-Durham Triangle.

About the Project

Not an absence. A presence.

The Baba Project is a long-form portrait series I started as personal work. It documents Black fathers and their children in ordinary moments, in their homes, at their parks, at their kitchen tables, doing the work of being present.

I started it because I'm a father. My son, Langston. I photograph this project because I know what it means for a Black child to see their father documented with care. Not as a statistic. Not as an absence. As someone who shows up.

The archive grows each year. Every father in it chose to participate knowing that their images would become part of a larger record: a document of Black fatherhood in the Triangle that will exist long after the session day.

From the Archive

Father standing behind his son with hands on his shoulders
Father and children playfully posing
Father holding his son upside down and laughing
Father holding his two daughters
Daughter climbing on her father's shoulders
Father seated with his teenage children
Grandfather, father and son embracing
Father relaxing on the floor with his sons
Father and son smiling cheek to cheek
Father seated with his daughters on his lap

A portrait session first.

Baba Project sessions are portrait sessions before anything else. You will receive a full edited gallery of images you can keep, print, and share, including images of you and your child that are intentional, lit, and made with care.

If you choose to have your session included in the archive, your images may appear in future exhibitions, publications, or online features of the project. That permission is entirely yours to give or withhold, and you can change your mind after the fact.

Sessions are 60–90 minutes, held in the Triangle at a location that reflects your family's world. The pace is unhurried. The approach is documentary. Bring your kid and show up as you are.

What to Expect

Unhurried. Documentary. Built around how you actually are with your kid.

Before

We talk. I want to know about your kid, including their age, their energy, what they love. That conversation shapes how I approach the session.

During

I follow you. I don't pose you into a formation and count to three. I watch what's already happening between you and your child and find the photographs inside it.

After

Your full edited gallery is delivered within 3 weeks. High-resolution files, online gallery, print release. These images are yours.

Apply

Sessions are available by application.

I accept a limited number of BFP participants each season. Fill out the contact form and let me know you're interested in the Baba Project. Include a little about you and your child.

There is no application fee. If your session is accepted, pricing follows the standard family portrait rate, with payment plans available.
